Petite Maman

Director: Céline Sciamma

2021 / 73min / DCP

Sciamma’s follow-up to her lauded Portrait of a Lady on Fire is a tender, compassionate, and refreshingly unsentimental study of loss as experienced by a child; a lovely and effervescent work centered on eight-year-old Nelly (Joséphine Sanz) who, when wandering in the woods shortly after the death of her beloved grandmother, encounters an awfully familiar-looking girl (Gabrielle Sanz, Joséphine’s twin sister) who offers Nelly a most unexpected chance to grow closer to both her mother and late grandmother. “Luminous… With delicacy, minimal dialogue, and lucid, harmoniously balanced images, Sciamma invites you into a world that is by turns ordinary and enigmatic.” —Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
