Aging aristocrat Biswambhar Roy (Chhabi Biswas), having squandered his inheritance and facing further personal tragedies, loses himself in his passion for music—a passion very much shared by Ray—spending the last of his wealth to hire performers of Indian classical music in a chamber especially reserved for such purposes. A sumptuous feast of music and dance, anchored around an exquisitely nuanced, multi-faceted performance by Biswas, whose character Ray manages to both criticize for his venality and admire for his genuine love of art.
