Director: Susan Todd, Andrew Young
1993 / 85min / DCP
Andrew Young, son of Robert M., returns to the subject of Cortile Cascino, a fabled but little-seen 1961 documentary by his father and his Nothing But a Man collaborator, Michael Roemer—the infamous slum in Palermo, Sicily. Thirty years after Cortile Cascino, the younger Young and his partner Susan Todd pick up with that film’s then-23-year-old central character, Angela Capra, now separated from her husband, and re-introduces her grown children, all of whom bear the scars of being raised with a lack of emotional and material resources. A portrait not only of a family, but of the legacy of intergenerational poverty.
