A grimy, mood-drenched memento from Fun City NYC—invested with pungent ambience by DP Johanna Heer, soon to go on to legendary work on Percy Adlon’s Sugarbaby—Subway Riders stars Poe himself as the horn-tooting psycho, Ant (with John Lurie, who exited the shoot abruptly, in a few shots), while Cookie Mueller, appearing in the role of Ant’s no-nonsense neighbor, gives Susan Tyrrell, in the part of Ant’s junkie wife, a run for her money as the most shrill character in the cast of castaways.
