Skyfly Superman
Director: Satoru Kobayashi, Shao Lo-hui
1968 / 90min / DCP
The third and final Dragon Superman adventure opens with a pack of masked baddies kidnapping two children in a Japanese garden, a high-kicking, bone-cracking donnybrook, and some sinister plotting involving a “mummy drug” and “invisibility experiments”… and that’s just the first five minutes! The gonzo action rarely lets up from then on, as Kobayashi and Shao go out both guns blazing, throwing in hair’s breadth escapes, buried treasure, jangly surf guitar, a fatal silly string cannon, plenty of 20-against-one brawls, gun-to-the-temple child endangerment, shameless sentimentality, a cracking motorboat chase, and further bumbling comic relief from La Te-nan’s Mr. Mischief. Pop cinema at its buoyant best, and a fitting goodbye to San Lin and the gang.
