A delightful homage to the necessary gay deceits behind true love, Minnelli’s festively colorful Caribbean-set musical comedy smorgasbord has Gene Kelly as an itinerant actor who, in order to win the love of Judy Garland’s dainty miss with a taste for romantic adventure, unfortunately already engaged, takes on the role of the infamous pirate Macoco. Cole Porter provides the sweet and swinging songbook which includes two renditions of “Be a Clown,” one performance of which includes barnstorming African American dance duo The Nicholas Brothers.
