Six Suspects
Director: Lin Tuan-Chiu
1965 / 108min / DCP
Keeping an eye on his ex-lover (Zhang Qingqing), the personal assistant to the chairman of a large steel company, private eye Kong-hui (Wu Dongru) picks up ample fodder to blackmail the folks in the front office—and so, when Kong-hui is found murdered, detective Yi Yuan won’t lack for suspects… though each trail he follows seems to lead to a dead end. A jazzy, ingeniously plotted urban whodunnit set in a Taipei in the first flush of postwar prosperity, Six Suspects was not granted a theatrical release on completion but has now been revealed, thanks to restoration work by the Taiwan Film Institute, as a darkly glittering gem of the mid-century Taiyupian.
