Serge Daney and Serge Toubiana

Serge Daney became the editor of Cahiers du Cinéma in 1974. In 1981, he left Cahiers and wrote about visual culture for Libération, turning his attention to television and coverage of the gulf War. He collaborated with Claire Denis on a documentary film, Jacques Rivette, le veilleur (1990). He died of AIDS-related causes in 1992. Born in 1949, Serge Toubiana worked as a film critic, journalist, and editor for the journal Les Cahiers du Cinéma from 1974 to 2000. He is a documentarmaker and the author of numerous publications on cinema, including a biography of François Truffaut, and books on the work of Amos Gitai, Maurice Pialat, and John Huston. He served as director general of La Cinémathèque Française from May 2003 to January 2016.
