MEANWHILE ON EARTH
Aspiring graphic novelist Elsa (an arresting Megan Northam) is struggling with the disappearance of her astronaut brother Franck, who vanished during his first mission. While stargazing one night, she is shocked to receive contact from him, but her joy is short-lived: dark forces are behind this reappearance. With its arresting images and ethereal score, the first live-action feature by Clapin—director of the lauded animation I Lost My Body (2023)—is a rich, vitally original sci-fi psychodrama.

HALLOWEEN AT HOME
Is that chill in the air the coming of autumn, or something more sinister? Either way, it’s the perfect time to hole up inside and scare yourself silly with this selection of frightful films, handpicked to help spread the holiday fear. Whether you like the blood to flow, thick and gloriously ketchup-y, as in the Dario Argento classics Inferno (1980) and The Stendhal Syndrome (1996), or you prefer your thrills more on the cerebral side, as in Jessica Hausner’s Hotel (2004) or Lukas Feigelfeld’s Hagazussa (2017), both icy Austrian tales of female isolation; whether you want to dabble in the dark arts (see: Daughters of Darkness, 1971) or just get down to brutal business (see Invader, 2024)—Metrograph At Home has you covered. Flick or treat!

ON THE RECORD
Speaking up has always been a risky business, but perhaps never more so than in our highly connected and surveilled age, in which even a throwaway comment can become a target for omnidirectional scrutiny and abuse. Both of the films in this pairing focus on individuals who chose to make themselves vulnerable in the name of truth: the NSA contractor Reality Winner, subject of Sonia Kennebeck’s self-titled documentary (2023), would do jail time for leaking documents that exposed Russia’s interference in the 2016 US elections, while the lauded British journalist Robert Fisk spent decades reporting from the frontlines of violent conflicts in the Middle East, as chronicled in Yung Chang’s This Is Not a Movie (2019).

Short Films by Jérémy Clapin
French animator Jérémy Clapin struck a chord with his unheimlich debut feature, the Cannes Critics Week-awarded, Oscar-nominated I Lost My Body (2019), before swerving into live-action with his follow-up, the intimate sci-fi Meanwhile on Earth (2024). This series brings together three of the shorts that first marked Clapin as one to watch, his warped and melancholic absurdism suffusing every image in these tales of misfits seeking solace.
