The Year Begins in Silence

Along with resolutions for quite a few of us, the New Year, following the gauntlet run of holiday engagements, airport delays, and binge boozing, is rung in with something approximate to a nervous collapse. The Year Begins in Silence is a series steeped in this sense of fatigue, comprised of films—from an array of international heavy hitters that includes Tarkovsky and Tarr, Bresson and Bergman, and just about any other sultan of the somber you can name—that examine exhaustion as a state of being as well as an opening to potential renewal, works that examine both the weight of unstructured time and quietude as well as the sense of relief found in both. Enjoy the silence.
