Jiā: Histories of Home
The Chinese character 家 (jiā) means both “home” and “family” and, accordingly, the two concepts are inextricably attached. Surveying almost 60 years of Taiwanese cinema, this series shows us the changing face of the country over decades—from the austerity of the postwar period to the rapid urbanization of the 1980s to a present shaped by migratory waves—and how notions of “家” have altered as the times have, reflected in some of the nation’s finest films. From little-screened works by Hsin Chi and Sung Tsun-shou to films marking the creative damburst of the Taiwanese New Wave to recent standouts by Huang Xi and Shih-Ching Tsou, this wide-ranging series offers something for both newcomers to Taiwan’s cinema and longtime connoisseurs.
