Outside of his pioneering cinematography work with directors Wim Wenders, Jim Jarmusch, and Peter Bogdanovich, to name just a few, Robby Müller was also an avid photographer, with the classic Polaroid cameras numbering amongst his favorites to utilize. Following his passing in 2018, Müller left behind a vast collection of over 2,000 Polaroid photographs, which his widow, Andrea Müller-Schirmer, has lovingly archived.
After being the subject of acclaimed exhibitions in Arles, Milan, and in the Netherlands, among other cities, and with representation from Annet Gelink Gallery, Amsterdam, Robby Müller’s Polaroids are beginning to receive due recognition as artistic achievements in their own right.
In collaboration with Annet Gelink Gallery, Metrograph Editions presents a limited edition print featuring a truly iconic image from the Robby Müller Archive.
Taken in 1986 while Müller was visiting New York City and in the midst of an unparalleled run of cinematographic work, the original Polaroid has been enlarged and printed with pristine detail by the Annet Gelink Gallery, with the work overseen by Müller-Schirmer. The resulting is true to the artist’s vision, revealing a mastery of light seldom seen since or before.
Of this particular photograph from the archive, Andrea says, “I am pleased that Robby continues to inspire through his photographic legacy. His Polaroids in particular are true explorations of light. While filming, time for this was in his downtime. As such, many photos were taken in hotel rooms. The Mayflower Hotel was, next to the Gramercy Park Hotel, his favorite in NYC. To me, this impression of the foggy city skyline behind Central Park has the same magic as his cinematic images.”
