Chaplin and Saura’s electric creative partnership began with this perverse play on Alfred Hitchcock’s (already quite perverse!) Vertigo, in which meek doctor José Luis López Vázquez becomes besotted with his childhood friend’s bride (Chaplin), and sets about making over a doting assistant (Chaplin, again) at the radiology clinic where he works into the image of the woman he yearns for but cannot have. A delirious and seriously deviant psychological thriller. “I got home quite late and turned on the television; a film in Spanish with subtitles, that I knew absolutely nothing about... It was hard for me to follow and understand but, at the same time, I was convinced it was the film of a great director.
