Married couple Teresa and Pedro (Chaplin and Per Oscarsson) live a life of antiseptic contentment in their chicly modern, minimalist home—that is until the delivery of a load of Teresa’s family’s furniture seems to jostle something loose in Teresa’s mind, leading her to press Pedro to join her in a series of “games” that have all the casual sadism of childhood in them, but also very real adult consequences. Saura’s first English-language feature is a harrowing vision of shifting power dynamics and mutually assured destruction played out in a conjugal hell, with Chaplin’s particular gift for radiating placid psychosis exercised to the fullest.
