Director: Ridley Scott
2001 / 131min / 35mm

Hopkins reprises his role from 1991’s The Silence of the Lambs as psychiatrist-turned-cannibal serial killer Hannibal Lecter in Scott’s follow-up, a gristly fairy tale that finds FBI special agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore, ably taking on the role originated by Jodie Foster) racing against time to find to catch up with her old foil before he’s located by Mason R. Verger (Gary Oldman), a sadistic scion of enormous wealth who, after years earlier being grotesquely mutilated by Lecter, has dedicated the entirety of his power and influence towards a terrible and extravagant dream of vengeance. Unidentified in promotional materials and unbilled until the film’s closing credits, wholly unrecognizable under a prosthetic mask, and stripped of almost every expressive tool an actor traditionally relies upon to practice their craft, Oldman offers up an indelible portrayal of utter and absolute human corruption.
