Sat May 30
Director: Victor Erice, Pere Portabella
1992 / 148min / 35mm

Erice, best known for his ravishing 1973 Spirit of the Beehive, here focuses his camera on Madrileño painter Antonio López as he goes about the daily labor of artistic creation, meticulously struggling to capture, to his satisfaction, a quince tree in his garden and the play of light in its leaves, with hopes of finishing his canvas before the time comes for the fruit to fall. A rapturous docufiction study in patience and painstaking observation, whose minimal narrative yields maximal rewards. Preceded by Miró l’altre, Portabella’s documentary record of Joan Miró painting the soon-to-be-erased “poster” for his 1969 exhibition at the Colegio de Arquitectos de Catalunya on the institution’s street-level windows.
