Wallace Shawn gives an entirely original reading of the part of aging architect Halvard Solness, appearing alongside Julie Hagerty, Lisa Joyce, and his My Dinner with André sparring partner André Gregory, in Demme’s document of a years-in-the-making performance of Ibsen’s 1892 play of the same name—an interpretation described by the director as “a haunted house movie”—as adapted by Shawn himself and “Created for the Stage” by Gregory, performed at Manhattan’s Pen and Brush Club.
