A landmark of Chinese independent documentary broaching subject matter that would’ve been strictly off limits to co-director Shi in his day job at Chinese Central Television (CCTV), I Have Graduated consists of interviews, given in student housing and on the grounds of various Beijing campuses, with members of the graduating classes of 1992, significantly, the class whose college experience began with the turbulence of 1989 and Tiananmen Square. Creating a platform for young people to speak, with rare candor, about their hopes and uncertainties, both concerning themselves and their country, Shi and Wang craft a tender group portrait of a generation on the precipice of the unknown.
