The Holy Girl
Director: Lucrecia Martel
2004 / 106min / 35mm
Martel’s second feature is a sullen, sensuous study in monomania and blighted love set in motion when Amalia (María Alche), an introverted, devout parochial school student, finds herself on the receiving end of an act of frottage in a crowd, interpreted by the girl as a sign from God, and thereafter commences to stalk the culprit, a middle-aged doctor (Carlos Belloso) staying at the hotel run by Amalia’s single mother, with a single-minded, almost religious devotion. Employing richly detailed sound design and cluttered compositions towards an oft-disorienting subjectivity, Martel crafts a singularly immersive, warts-and-all portrait of sexual awakening, executively produced by Pedro Almodóvar.
