Jollof Films presents Xalé: The Childhood Wounds
No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Moussa Sene Absa
2022 / 101min / DCP
In collaboration with Brooklyn-based Jollof Films, co-founded by Senegalese artists Assane Sy and Ahmad Cissé, and their pan-African cinema club, we present a screening of Absa’s Dakar-set family melodrama Xalé (2022), a vibrant, chronology-hopping tale of female resilience and revenge that freely pick-and-mixes narrative strategies.
“We chose Xalé because of its director, Moussa Sène Absa, one of the few legendary Senegalese filmmakers still with us today. We were lucky to meet him at the film’s premiere during the New York African Film Festival, and his vision of African cinema, and the purpose behind his work, resonated deeply with us. Xalé, the third film in his trilogy, is an unapologetic, deeper dive into the powerful, women-centered world he has built from the first two installments. Here, Moussa further dissects and confronts the elephant in the room when it comes to gender-based violence.” —Assane Sy and Ahmad Cissé, Jollof Films
