An injured Nigerian soccer player (Olegunleko Ezekiel Gbenga), cut from his team and now adrift in Saigon, where he’d relocated to play, finds himself sharing quarters with a quartet of middle-aged Vietnamese women in a bunker-like habitation, providing stud service to the lot between other odd jobs, in Le’s oneiric, fiercely original, dialogue-sparse debut, awarded a Special Jury Prize following its premiere in Berlinale’s avant-garde Encounters section. Cinematographer Nguyễn Vinh Phúc lends Le’s tableaux vivant-inspired mise en scène a somber, spectral beauty, and contributes immeasurably to a film difficult to describe and impossible to forget.
