Re-Wind
Director: Hisayasu Satō
1977 / 65min / DCP
One of the “Four Heavenly Kings of Pink” who turned the Japanese pinku eiga softcore industry into a seething hotbed of formal experimentation and taboo-busting transgression, Satō was arguably the most stylistically extreme and altogether unhinged of the quartet, qualities much in evidence in this, one of the dozens of splenetic, gore-clotted cinematic outbursts that the manically prolific, punky filmmaker produced in the late ’80s. The discovery of an apparently authentic snuff video in a refrigerator leads a young man into the grimy underbelly of Tokyo’s underground video scene—and ever deeper into his own blossoming perversions—a descent into all-out deviance that Satō depicts with the lip-smacking relish of a true connoisseur.
