Mon Mar 2
Director: Bahram Beyzaie
1974 / 146min / DCP

Beyzaie’s haunting, dreamlike second feature, set on the coastline of the Caspian Sea and its surroundings in northern Iran, opens with a mysterious boat arriving at the shore near a fog-wreathed village; local Rana (Parvaneh Massoumi), whose husband was lost at sea, hopes against hope that this augers his return, but the only cargo is the wounded, amnesiac Ayat (Khosrow Shojazadeh), who, upon recovering his health if not his memory, will take the lovely widow as his bride—only to be gnawed at by concerns that the past he has forgotten isn’t yet done with him. Banned after Iran’s 1979 revolution and long nigh-impossible to see, The Stranger and the Fog has thankfully now been restored to all of its eerie beauty.

Distributor: Janus Films

"The Stranger and the Fog was restored in 4K using the original camera and sound negatives and was carried out at L'Immagine Ritrovata in 2023. Color grading was supervised by Bahram Beyzaie. With special thanks to Ehsan Khoshbakht and Mozhdeh Shamsai. "
