ACE presents The Squid and the Whale
Director: Noah Baumbach
2005 / 81min / 4K DCP
Baumbach returned after a hiatus of several years and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay with this heartbreaking—and heavily autobiographical—depiction of a family coming apart at the seams in 1980s Park Slope. Two brothers, the elder a fresh-faced Jesse Eisenberg, are left to fend for themselves while their parents (Jeff Daniels, in a shrewd performance of self-important obliviousness, and a peerless Laura Linney) struggle to maintain a veneer of civility through their divorce. A live wire act, given invaluable assistance through the dab-handed cutting of Tim Streeto, ACE, that manages to be at once merciless and enormously empathetic, achieving real pathos with a late needle-drop of Lou Reed’s “Street Hassle.”
