Master of the House

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Carl Theodor Dreyer
1925 / 111min / DCP

Devoted to unemployed husband Johannes Meyer but driven to wit’s end by his tyrannical demands upon her, homemaker Astrid Holm, encouraged by her mother (Clara Schønfeld), the couple’s eldest daughter (Karin Nellemose), and her spouse’s aging nanny (Mathilde Nielsen), makes up her mind to wriggle out from under her partner’s thumb, in the process giving him ample opportunity to appreciate just how reliant he is on her. A supremely assured, fluidly constructed proto-feminist chamber drama that anticipates Akerman’s Jeanne Dielmann in its attention to the unacknowledged labor-intensive nature of housework, Master of the House is also a disarmingly funny film, giving ample evidence that Dreyer, when he chose to give it free rein, was possessed of a wry satirical sense of humor.
