Director: Fred C. Newmeyer, Sam Taylor
1925 / 76min / DCP
Harold Lloyd, whose round horn-rimmed glasses and straw-boater had, by 1925, become the international symbol for a certain breed of plucky can-do go-getter, initiated a craze for collegiate comedies with The Freshman, in which our eager-beaverish frosh hero, Harold Lamb (Lloyd), newly arrived on the grounds of Tate College, sets his sights on winning over the winsome Jobyna Ralston, becoming Big Man on Campus, and achieving gridiron stardom, along the way enduring public mortification and bone-crunching pratfalls, only to emerge from each fresh trial with grin and goodwill intact. A string of exquisitely calibrated set pieces, each more hysterical than the last, with its football field climax among the glories of the American silent comedy.
