Director: Klára Tasovská
2024 / 90min / DCP
Oft referred to as the Nan Goldin of Czechoslovakia, photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková was a chronicler of after-dark Prague in the 1970s and ’80s whose images of let-it-all-hang-out gay clubs, factory hands working the third shift, and clandestine parties give a picture of communist-era Czechoslovakia very different from the official one circulated outside the country. The subject of Tasovská’s compelling documentary—the Czech entry for the 98th Academy Awards— Jarcovjáková is given a platform to tell her story: that of one woman’s tireless search for liberation in an era of state repression. A candid and revelatory work of stripped-down nonfiction filmmaking, which achieves extraordinary emotional effects with nothing more than its subject’s voice and the indelible images she produced.
