The Gospel According to André
No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Kate Novack
2017 / 93min / DCP
Raised in Durham, North Carolina, when Jim Crow segregation still dictated the rules of everyday life in the South, André Leon Talley, who died in 2022 at age 73, would go on to become the first African American man to hold a creative director position at Vogue, acting as editor-at-large from 1998 to 2013. Novack’s film, which includes testimonials from Tom Ford, Anna Wintour, Whoopi Goldberg, and a host of other A-list admirers, pays tribute to this towering, epigram-spouting, caftan-and-cape-clad dandy, a self-invented character appreciated here for not only his splashy self-presentation and withering wit, but for his extraordinary persistence in the face of racism and fashion world elitism, and for his deadly serious approach to his craft.
