Yamanaka’s follow-up to her 2017 Amiko, which she dropped out of college to direct when still in her teens, gives Yuumi Kawai a star-making role as Kana, a volatile, capricious, pugnacious, very possibly mentally unbalanced 21-year-old Tokyo woman working as a beautician but unresolved to this career path or, indeed, any aspect of her existence. She disses and discards the men in her life, shuttles between cramped apartments, and generally leaves a trail of lies and chaos in her wake wherever she goes. Winner of the Fipresci award at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, Desert of Namibia is an unpredictable live wire character study of a Gen Z wild child hurtling recklessly into an uncertain and unpromising future.
