Barney’s SECONDARY, filmed in the artist’s Long Island City studio, is a multivalent study of sport-sanctioned violence and its representation, a five-channel video installation with incorporated sculpture that interrogates the traumatic memory and lasting legacy of a gridiron tragedy that occurred during a 1978 game between the Oakland Raiders and New England Patriots. Accompanying Rizzoli’s release of a lavishly illustrated 400-page, two volume companion book to SECONDARY, offering intensive, intimate insight into Barney’s creative process, Metrograph will present a unique screening of the artist’s latest opus in a single-channel projection, followed by a discussion about the new SECONDARY book with Barney, editor Louise Neri, and essayist Eric Banks. A reception with the opportunity to purchase signed books will conclude the evening.
