Director: Olukemi Lijadu
2022 / 30min / Digital
Speciwomen in collaboration with Airtime is pleased to present a selection of three short films by current Magnet resident Lijadu, screened for the first time in New York City. Commissioned by ICA London in 2022, Guardian Angel explores the artist’s relationship with religion, informed by her grandmother, study of African philosophy and Catholic upbringing. The film is paired with two short films as part of Lijadu’s Trading Memories series. Trading Memories is a moving image body of work and soundscape that includes film, sound and photography and based on a collection of photos of a middle-class family in Lagos found by Lijadu in an antique market in Notting Hill, London in 2021.
“But what is it to just know? This is what I am investigating in this series of works. In Trading Memories, I am investigating the photographs, not just as objects of memory and a family history but as a site of encounter, between myself and the images. I [am trying to] tease apart the moments of recognition and [to] focus on them.” —Olukemi Lijadu"
Presented in collaboration with Airtime
A conversation between Airtime founder Asli Baykal and Olukemi Lijadu reflecting on the space of film in her practice will follow the screening.
