The Beekeeper
No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Theo Angelopoulos
1986 / 122min / DCP
With Fellini’s Ginger and Fred of the same year, also in this series, Angelopoulos’s sullen, taciturn road movie—the second installment in his Trilogy of Silence—gives us a radically deglamorized Marcello Mastroianni, here playing a retired schoolteacher, crestfallen by his daughter’s marriage, who has taken back up the profession of his forefathers, beekeeping, hitting the road to gather nectar for his hives from north to south Greece, striking up an unusual relationship with a young female drifter along the way. The spare, philosophical script marks Guerra’s second collaboration with Angelopoulos, their partnership lasting until the deaths of both men in 2012.
