Director: Todd Field
2022 / 158min / DCP
Field came back swinging after a 16-year absence from the director’s chair with this taut, controversy-courting psychological drama starring Cate Blanchett as Lydia Tár, celebrity conductor of a Berlin orchestra whose psychic unravelling is hastened, her marriage to concertmaster Nina Hoss compromised, and her professional prospects ruined after she’s hit with public allegations of sexual predation. Nominated for six Academy Awards, including a Best Editing nomination for Monika Willi, with whom Field spent long, secluded hours cutting the film at a 15th-century former nunnery outside Edinburgh, Scotland. “The biggest challenge,” Willi would say of the process, “was the overall musicality… To have one big piece made of a lot of smaller pieces and see that it never lost its tension.”
Q&A with editor Monika Willi moderated by composer Alex Weston on Saturday, March 29th
