The Lost Daughter

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Maggie Gyllenhaal
2021 / 121min / DCP

Gyllenhaal took on Elena Ferrante’s beloved 2006 novel of the same name for her auspicious feature directorial debut, which boasts another peerless performance by Olivia Colman as a university professor and translator, Leda, who becomes inexorably drawn towards a young mother (Dakota Johnson) and her three-year-old daughter while on holiday in Greece, and finds herself confronting her own complicated relationship with motherhood as this new friendship develops. Providing exquisite, understated scenography, Weinberg works alongside an impressive crew including composer Dickon Hinchliffe and cinematographer Hélène Louvart, their talents combining to make The Lost Daughter a character study whose air of dreamy melancholy lingers long after the credits roll.

“Cabiria, one of the great female characters in cinema history, inspired The Lost Daughter through her strength, determination, and also her vulnerability in moments of immense solitude. I return to the films of Federico Fellini constantly, and they never cease to amaze and inspire me. The images he created on screen are so potent, unconventional and original. His world is imbued with symbolism, surrealism and fantasy in a way that invites us all to explore our own imagination.” —Inbal Weinberg
