Suspiria
No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Luca Guadagnino
2018 / 152min / DCP
Inspired by Dario Argento’s horror-fantasy classic of the same name, Guadagnino’s homage/loose remake emphasizes the heightened political tensions of its period setting, the “German Autumn” of 1977, with Weinberg meticulously recreating the divided Berlin where American Dakota Johnson has arrived to study at a prestigious dance academy under lead choreographer Tilda Swinton (in one of her three roles), only to uncover the school’s insidious hidden secret.
“Wings of Desire is one of my favorite films thanks to its unique juxtaposition of a poetic storyline and the stark realism of postwar Berlin. While working on Suspiria, I did extensive research into the history of Berlin, concentrating on its famous Wall, which we had to reconstruct in both Italy and Germany. Wenders’s film was not just a visual reference—it also offered a cinematic essay on the soul of the city, which in turn helped enrich the many levels of Suspiria’s imagery.” —Inbal Weinberg
