An acclaimed poet (Javier Bardem) and his wife and muse (Jennifer Lawrence), living in seclusion in a picture-perfect country manse, receive an unexpected—and not entirely welcome—visit from an ailing stranger (Ed Harris), his wife (Michelle Pfeiffer), and their two adult sons (Brian and Domhnall Gleeson)… and then the fun starts. Shot throughout, by Aronofsky’s go-to DP Matthew Libatique, from an angle approximating the point-of-view of Lawrence’s increasingly harried and hysterical character, Aronofsky’s apocalyptic allegory tugs on the loose thread of a minor domestic tiff until it starts to unravel reality itself, devolving into a vision of hell that Hieronymus Bosch himself might envy.
