Saturday Afternoon Cartoons: Frosty Fun
No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
2024 / 60min / 16mm
Saturday Afternoon Cartoons is New York City’s prime theatrical showcase of early and classic animated cartoons, shown in vintage 16mm film prints from the personal archives of historian Tommy José Stathes. Beginning over 20 years ago as a casual effort to find and see early cartoons that were unavailable on home video, Stathes’s collection has grown to become perhaps one of the largest of its kind. It includes many titles and ‘orphan films’ that are difficult to access or view elsewhere.
Stathes joins Metrograph in early December with Frosty Fun, a selection of vintage animated shorts exploring wintertime hijinks. Come enjoy a famous cartoon cat exploring a frigid exotic land; a wily woodpecker wreaking havoc at a ski lodge; a live action little girl adopting a cartoon kitten from a frozen pond; a foolish farmer playing in the snow with his barnyard friends; a flat-broke frog panhandling in icy weather, and last but certainly not least, the film debut of a very famous snowman! Spanning the 1920s through to the ’50s, this assortment showcases classic characters such as Krazy Kat, Farmer Alfalfa, Felix the Cat, Flip the Frog, Julius the Cat, Woody Woodpecker, and others.
