For 30 years, Mississippi native Mark Landis—one of the most versatile and productive art forgers living today—played the role of the philanthropist, donating his canvases, under the names of established academics and iconic modernists, to museums all over the United States… until one registrar uncovers his subterfuge, kicking up a storm of protest from the various experts he’s successfully bamboozled throughout the years. Art and Craft is a compassionate and often very funny study of the life and lies of Landis, a diagnosed schizophrenic whose unusual “practice” was inspired not by a desire for wealth, but by far more esoteric motives.
