Uncle Buck

Director: John Hughes

1989 / 100min / DCP

"Newly arrived in the Chicago suburbs and spread thin by a family medical emergency, Bob and Cindy Russell are in desperate need of a helping hand with their three kids—so desperate they call in Bob’s brother Buck, a big, booze-swilling bachelor who earns his living at the race track and flees from any hint of adult responsibility like the plague. A custom-made vehicle for John Candy, playing Buck with a perfect mixture of bonhomie and boorish brashness, and armed with an arsenal of Hughes’s finest one-liners. (“Take this quarter, go downtown, and have a rat gnaw that thing off your face.”)
