The Beaver Trilogy

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Trent Harris
2000 / 85min / DCP

"Harris’s chance encounter with 21-year-old “Groovin’ Gary,” a desperately extroverted TV junkie whose hobby of impersonating Olivia Newton-John in drag is looked at slightly askance by the residents of his little hometown of Beaver, Utah, produced first a short documentary portrait of Gary, then two fictional follow-ups, one a 1981 black-and-white shot-on-video reenactment starring a very young Sean Penn as Gary and Harris as himself, the other a 1985 short film with oddball specialist Crispin Glover, which draws out that poignant, tragicomic side of Gary’s story. “I made each one because I was trying to fix it” says Harris of his triptych, united as The Beaver Trilogy in 2000, and offering a unique perspective on a filmmaker’s developing relationship with a subject.
