Danton's Death (2011, 64 mins)
Towards Tenderness (2016, 40 mins)Skilfully illustrating the persistence of racialized stereotyping and its impact on the individual, Diop’s documentary Danton's Death follows the professional struggles of a young Black actor from Aulnay-sous-bois, a disadvantaged community on the outskirts of Paris where Diop herself grew up. Even studying at the prestigious Cours Simon drama school, Steve Tientcheu finds, to his mounting frustration, that his Blackness and social background delimit his opportunities on stage. Screens with Towards Tenderness, in which four young men from the Parisian banlieues discourse on sex and love in this up-close and confessional, César-winning contemporary exploration of the male gaze.
Q&A with director Alice Diop, moderated by writer and film curator Yasmina Price, on Saturday, November 16th
