La Belle Noiseuse

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Jacques Rivette
1991 / 238min / 35mm

Inspired by Honoré de Balzac’s 1831 short story The Unknown Masterpiece, Rivette’s intimate epic stars Michel Piccoli as a painter retired to Provence with wife Jane Birkin, having been abandoned by his muse after failing to complete a canvas that shares its title with the film—until, that is, the girlfriend (Emmanuelle Béart) of a rising artist, inspires him to pick up his brush again, with the artist and his model (often nude but never helpless) entering into a close and contentious collaboration. An incisive and immersive study of the creative process that, in addition to becoming one of Rivette’s greatest popular successes, earned him the Grand Prix at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival.
