Dylan Tichenor’s dab-handed cutting lends Affleck’s Charlestown, Boston-set adaptation of Chuck Hogan’s crime novel Prince of Thieves a cool, lucid, streamlined velocity, with Affleck taking on the role of the leader of a brutally efficient stick-up crew. As his relationship with best friend and loose cannon partner Jeremy Renner begins to fray, romance blossoms with unwitting ex-hostage Rebecca Hall, and Fed Jon Hamm starts to close in on the gang, finding himself contemplating a life after crime. A taut, tough thriller made with a deep feeling for local color, featuring a bravura Fenway Park heist and the always superb Pete Postlethwaite in his final performance as an Irish mobster who does his dirty business out of a florist’s shop.
