Director: Isao Takahata
1991 / 119min / DCP
Studio Ghibli co-founder Takahata’s much-anticipated follow-up to his acclaimed Grave of the Fireflies (1988) was this lyrical memory piece in which Taeko, a 27-year-old Tokyo office girl on a trip to the countryside, reflects back on her school days—including academic and romantic frustrations, as well as the transformations of puberty—and on her unfulfilling present-day life as she stays (and works) on a safflower farm belonging to relatives of her sister’s husband. A celebration of the beauty of the Japanese countryside, suffused with nostalgia for the 1960s, Only Yesterday, based on a 1982 manga by Hotaru Okamoto and Yuko Tone, was Japan’s biggest box office hit in the year of its release.
