The Legend of the Stardust Brothers

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Macoto Tezuka
1985 / 100min / DCP

Tezuka, son of legendary manga artist Osamu Tezuka, made his madcap directorial debut at the tender age of 22 adapting Haruo Chikada’s 1980 “imaginary soundtrack” concept album of the same title into this vaudevillian lampoon of DayGlo ’80s pop culture, a whirlwind of celebrity cameos, earworm tunes, costume changes, and over-the-top bad behavior-packed starring Kan Tagaki and Shingo Kubota as arch-rival musicians forced, by a lucrative signing deal and the lure of superstardom, to grudgingly perform as a duo. A manic Japanese answer to Brian De Palma’s Phantom of the Paradise, spurned on its initial release but reclaimed since as a cult classic.
