Two short films by Pommereulle screen with Monuments aux vivants, a cinematic record by Anton Bialas and Ferdinand Gouzon of some twenty of Pommereulle’s sculptures. Produced by Swiss gallerist and publisher Claude Givaudan, Pommereulle’s riveting, minimalist One More Time follows a woman who has decided to “stage” her own death awaiting the descent of a machine designed to pierce her throat. In Vite—made under the auspices of the Zanzibar Group, the cadre of renegade filmmakers who worked in total freedom under the patronage of heiress Sylvina Boissonnas—earthbound images of wading through mud and crossing difficult, mountainous terrain, shot in Morocco and shored with hectic drumbeats, are contrasted with crystalline views of the moon’s surface and the rings of Saturn, filmed through the lens of the Questar telescope, suggesting a dream of salvation in the cosmos.
Q&A with curators Boris Bergmann & Armance Léger, moderated by filmmaker Kathy Brew, on Friday, September 13th
