An unexpected change of pace for Lanthimos, whose deadpan, absurdist dark comedies had placed him at the vanguard of the Greek “Weird Wave,” The Favourite is a foul-mouthed Restoration England-set romp that renders comic gold from hitting-below-the-belt palace intrigues between the Duchess of Marlborough (Rachel Weisz) and Abigail Hill (Emma Stone) as they compete to be the court favorite—and bedmate—of the ailing Queen Anne (Olivia Colman, winner of the Academy Award for Best Actress). The ostentatious costuming of designer Sandy Powell, fluid camerawork by DP Robbie Ryan, and acid-tongued screenplay by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara all work towards creating a deliriously enjoyable work of the bawdy baroque.
