Director: Gilles Bourdos
2017 / 105min / DCP
Mark Lee Ping-bing traveled to the French Riviera to shoot Bourdos’s ensemble piece, adapted from the stories of American writer Richard Bausch, which tells the interlocking and overlapping stories of a young bride, Josephine (Alice Isaaz), and her groom, Tomasz (Vincent Rottiers); Josephine’s new neighbor, his pregnant daughter, and the father-to-be of her child, university professor Yann (Carlo Brandt); and Yann’s PhD student and his mentally unbalanced mother. Shooting the seaside resort in off-season, Lee gives us an eerily empty, unfamiliar Nice that’s very far from postcard pretty, but chillily beautiful all the same, in a deftly composed and delicately performed study of dysfunctional families and shifting power balances in contrast.
Introduction from Mark Lee Ping-bing on Sunday, September 8th
