Hüller’s breakthrough film role, after several years on the stage, came in Schmid’s economical and enormously moving psychological drama, playing a 21-year-old college freshman, Michaela, who, faced with the stresses of being away from her devoutly Catholic family for the first time and the preliminary taste of adulthood offered in campus life, comes to believe that she’s possessed by the devil and in immediate need of exorcism. Giving an “astonishingly physical performance with an intimate, naturalistic style” [New York Times] in her first shot at carrying a movie, Hüller immediately proved herself a performer of unusual depth and devotion.
