Director: Joan Micklin Silver
1975 / 89min / 4K DCP
Silver’s feature debut scored Kane an Academy Award nomination for her performance as Gitl, an Eastern European Jew newly arrived in New York’s Lower East Side with her young son for an anticipated reunion with his father and her husband, Yankel (Steven Keats), only to find that Yankel has assimilated a little too well to this New World—to the point of taking a dancing girl as his lover. A poignant portrait of a woman torn between tradition and the blank slate offered by her adopted home, adapted—with a keen eye for period detail—from Abraham Cahan’s 1896 novella Yekl: A Tale of the New York Ghetto.
Carol Kane in person for post-screening conversation with staff writer at The New Yorker, Naomi Fry, on Saturday, August 17th
